Whether
you love live music and want to explore the many sounds of Austin, or
you have a guitar on your back wanting to play music in a quaint cafe,
Austin, "The Live Music Capital of the World," is the place for you!
The sounds of blues, punk, country, folk, bluegrass, jazz, pop, and
rock 'n roll are heard in venues throughout the Austin area. On any
given Friday night, there are approximately 100 venues offering any
style of music you could want, and much of the club scene rocks every
night of the week. Austinites have the choice of listening to top
national touring shows as well as up-and-coming artists. The live
music venues are as varied as the type of music. You can find musicians
playing in the record stores, museums, art galleries, bookstores,
gourmet grocery stores, and in the parks or sidewalks as well as the
clubs and cafes. Austin's New Orleans style Sixth Street opens its
street to live music on the weekends. The nationally televised Austin City Limits draws attention to the Austin music scene from all over the world. The city hosts South by Southwest, one of the most acclaimed live music festivals all over.
Austin's live music scene began in the early 1970's and continues to
grow today. It continues to gain prominence as artists of all talents
make their way to Austin seeking attention for their own music talent. Billboard magazine
has called Austin a "mecca for musical mavericks and a creative oasis,
a place that puts music first and career far behind." It has been the
beginning for many well-known performers such as Stevie Ray Vaughan,
Shawn Colvin, Fastball, and many others.
So, whether you prefer sitting in a
softly dimmed cafe quietly listening to blues or you prefer dancing the
night away to rock 'n roll, you will find in it Austin.
